Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 08 Nov. 1917. North McGregor column.

Jorand Hanson was born April 3, 1830, at Numerdale, Norway, and died October 27, 1917, at North McGregor, Iowa, aged 87 years, 6 months and 24 days.

When a child she came to America with her parents, three sisters and two brothers. When the family landed at New York, her oldest brother, Ole Hanson, died. The family came to the west as this part of the United States was then called, and took up a homestead six miles from Boscobel, Wis., where her parents lived until their death, the mother passing away at the age of ninety years, and the father at ninety-six.

In the year 1858, at the home of her parents at Boscobel, Wis., she was united in marriage to Ole Nielson. They came immediately to North McGregor, to the home Mr. Nielson had built for his bride. It is the dwelling adjoining the M.E. church on the east, and the plastering was scarcely dry when they moved in, and there were less than a dozen houses in the pioneer town.

Here in this home, in the shelter of the hills, they two faced the struggles and hardships of those early days, bravely and together, success rewarding their efforts until they were large property owners in the town.

In this home their six children were born, two dying in infancy, and their son, Henry Nielson, druggist and pharmacist here, dying in 1899, aged twenty-six years.

She is survived by her husband, Ole Nielson, who is very low, two daughters, Mrs. Anna Johnson, of Madison; Mrs. Jennie Ashard, of Milwaukee, and one son, Nels O. Nielson, of Petersburg, Alaska, and one grandson, Henry Ashard, of Milwaukee.

The funeral services were held Monday forenoon in the M.E. church, Rev. Perry preaching from Isaiah 61. Mrs. N. E. Krohn, Mrs. E. Scott, Mrs. Schneider, assisted by the pastor, with Mrs. O. F. Campbell, organist, comprised the choir.
