Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 25 Oct. 1917. Monona column.

The community was saddened, Wednesday morning, to learn of the very sudden passing of W. H. Russell. He was preparing to go out with the men on the Liberty Bond drive and had stepped out to get some coal when death came without a moments warning. He leaves a wife, three daughters and one son.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 01 Nov. 1917. Monona column.

Wilson Henry Russell was born in North Hero, Vermont, on Lake Champlain on the 8th day of January, 1857. In 1871 he came west with his parents and settled in Iowa. He was married to Lizzie A. Hopkins at Luana on July 21, 1881. From there they moved to Nebraska, and came back to Iowa in 1883 and resided on a farm near Luana until the spring of 1903.

Owing to an impaired state of health, he decided to give up faming and moved to Monona, there taking up a less strenuous occupation, which seemed to greatly benefit his health. He lived in Monona up to the time when he passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 1917.

Mrs. Russell survives him with four daughters and one son, Mrs. C. C. Clifton, of Thompson, Iowa, Mrs. F. J. Henderson, of New Hampton, Mrs. Maple, of Chicago, Mrs. P. J. Doody, of Monona; Eugene W. Russell, of Monona. Also one sister and one brother, Mrs. D. F. Sawyer, of Waukon and H. D. Russell, of Chicago, and seven grandchildren, one having since passed away on Sunday night, Oct. 28th, Daniel Russell Doody, the baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Doody, of Monona.

W. H. Russell, in his business as assessor, was brought into contact with many people, and made many friends, and formed a very large acquaintance, and he will be greatly missed by all. His happy, genial and patient spirit made its influence felt wherever he went, even though often suffering intense pain, he would hide it behind a smile and a cheery word. Such spirits are rare and their presence is a benediction. So it can be truly said of our departed brother in the language of Holy Writ "Know ye not that a great and good man this day has fallen in Israel ?'

The funeral service was held on Saturday, Oct. 27th, in the Congregational church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. B. Hall. The interment took place in the Monona cemetery.

The funeral will occur from the Congregational church Saturday morning at __:30 a.m.
