George A. Franz, Sr., was born at Sherrills Mound, Iowa, Sept 26, 1846. He was united in marriage Dec. __, 1868, to Christena Foell of Sherrills Mound. They moved to Clayton in 190_, where he had since resided until a few months before his death, when he was visiting his daughter at Sherrills, and they were on their way to visit another daughter at Gury, S.D., and while at Owa____a in the depot, he was suddenly stricken with heart failure and expired. He was the father of nine children, of whom five are living, namely, George, of Clayton; Mrs. W. M. Moire, of Sherrills Mound; Albert, of Sni Magill; Willie, of Dubuque, and Mrs. Ed Shepherd, of Gury, S.D. He departed from this life on August _, 1917, at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 6 days. Mrs. Franz died June 12, 1909. Mr. Franz was a loving father and a kind neighbor. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. Burial was in the Clayton cemetery, and six of the nephews were pall bearers.
