The remains 0f Mr. Jacob Maier an old pioneer resident of this community who resided on a farm near Littleport were brought to Elkport for burial. The services were held at the Lutheran church and the funeral was largely attended by a legion of friends. Mr. Maier reached the age of 83 years and leaves besides his family a number of friends who will miss him.

Jacob Maier, son of George and Anna Maier, was born Dec. 23, 1833, in Swinnegen, Wittenberg, Germany.
October 26, 1846, with his parents, three brothers and one sister, he sailed for America, landing at New York Dec. 24, 1846, having encountered severe storms on their voyage. From New York they went to Trenton, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they resided three years; going thence to Pittsfield, Ill., by way of Niagara Falls and Buffalo. While on their way his younger brother, Thomas, drowned while crossing the Ohio river. Leaving Pittsfield, they journeyed to St. Louis, Missouri, residing there but a short time, after which they again returned to Pittsfield. In 1856 he settled on a farm in Clayton county, Iowa, where he resided until the time of his death on August 10, 1917.
July 9, 1865, he was united in marriage to Mary Lundt, whom the Angel of death called to her reward on June 18, 1890. He leaves to mourn his departure, Fred H., of Wadena, Iowa; Mrs. J. C. Stocker, of Charles City, Iowa; Emil C., on the old home and Alvina E. and Lucy K., of Rockford, Iowa; and Mary D. preceding him to her eternal home March 12, 1914. He also leaves eight grandchildren besides other relatives and numerous friends.
Early Friday morning, August 3rd, he was stricken with paralysis and during his brief illness all the surviving children were at his bedside kindly ministering to him unto the end.
He attained the age of 83 years, 7 months and 18 days, being a pioneer settler and enduring the hardships and privation of pioneer days. The funeral services were held at the Lutheran church at Elkport, August 12, Rev. W. W. Paulsen officiating.
