Elkadeer Register & Argus, Thur., 09 Aug. 1917. Monona column.

Susan Blackford, daughter of John and Lydia Blackford, was born in East Rochester, Ohio, March 3, 1843. When twelve years of age she moved with her parents to Bourbon, Indiana. At this place she was united in marriage to Peter L. Grube, December 15, 1862. Four years later, she and her husband moved to Clayton county, Iowa. During these many years since that time Monona and vicinity has enjoyed the friendship and service of this useful woman. On Saturday, August 4, 1917, at the noon hour she answered the final summons and went to join the husband whose death occurred six and one-half years ago. She had reached her seventy-fifth year.

Eight children were born to this worthy couple, seven of them surviving the parents. One son, Owen, died in infancy. The other children are all married and are widely separated. Mrs. Anna Weber lives at Carlyle, Kans., William E., at Weta, S.D.; Mrs. Carrie Hess, at Cedar Falls, Iowa; John F., at Cresco, Iowa; Albert M., at Spokane, Wash.; Horace E., at Clarion, Iowa; and Mrs. Marie Walch, at Monona. One brother, J. M. Blackford of Delevan, Wisconsin, is the only other immediate relative surviving.

For many weeks Mrs. Grube has been a patient sufferer from an incurable disease. Physicians and friends have done all that was possible for her comfort, but only the hand of death could stay the severity of her pain. While the friends and loved ones feel the loss sustained in her passing, they could not wish her pain and suffering prolonged. Mrs. Grube was quiet and unassuming in her manner but was a woman of genuine worth. She gladly gave her help whenever it was needed, and was quick to see an opportunity for service. Those who have known her through the years bear testimony to her helpfulness. A noble life has closed leaving for others the kindly deeds and neighborly acts which brighten and make glad the community.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at Monona, Monday afternoon, August 6, Rev. James B. Bird of Waukon and Rev. Clyde E. Baker of Monona officiating. Burial in Monona cemetery.
