Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 31 May 1917. Volga column.
Sam Bennington, youngest son of Samuel and Esther Bennington, was born near Volga, Iowa, Aug. 29, 1872, and died May 27, 1917, aged 44 years, 8 months and 28 days. He leaves a wife and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Butcher, of Lawrence, Mich., and Mrs. Esther Griffiths, of Marion, Iowa, also one brother, Chas. Bennington, of Rago, Kansas, died in March of the present year. Nephews and nieces and hosts of friends will miss his kindly presence. He was a kind and loving husband and brother, thoughtful for every one more than himself. His mother died when he was eight years of age, his sister, Mrs. Butcher, ever after taking the mother's place ever faithfully, caring for father Bennington and all until his death. To her Sammie was her especial care and called "my boy." We shall miss him but the parting will not be for long, God helping us. The funeral was held in the M.E. church Tuesday afternoon. Rev. W. H. Smith had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. Pearson. The very large crowd present showed the sorrow that the community feel over his death.
