Andrew J. Fonda was born at West Troy, N.Y., Aug. 19, 1833. When quite young he went with the family into Herkimer County, N.Y. There he worked at lumbering until 1854. From there he went to California, returning in 1856, and again engaged in the lumbering business.
In 1884 he went to Madison, S.D., took up a claim and engaged in farming until 1908, when he sold his farm. After spending a short time in Oregon, he came to Monona and lived with his brother Mitchell's family until his death, which occurred April 21, 1917.
He was one of a family of twelve children, ten of which grew to maturity. William and Alexander, of Osage; Clementine, of Monona; James, of Bellevue, Iowa, are still living.
The funeral services were held in the home and conducted by the Congregational pastor, Rev. H. Briscoe Hall. The interment took place on April 24, 1917, at Monona, Iowa.
