Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 22 Feb. 1917. Monona column.
John Herman Henry Kaiser was born at Gerde, Hanover, Germany, October 5th, 1846. In 1848 he, with his parents, emigrated to the United States. They located in Illinois for about a year, then came to Clayton County, Iowa, where he has lived since.
He was confirmed at the age of fourteen by Rev. Klein, of Garnavillo. He was united in marriage to Miss Pauline Wirkler, March 28th, 1873. They were blessed with ten children, six sons and four daughters, two sons dying in infancy.
For thirty-one years they lived on the well-known farm near National. Tired of farming, the family moved to Monona in 1904.
The deceased was gifted with a very strong and healthy constitution. About two years ago he was attacked with that much dreaded disease, cancer. He underwent three serious operations, which brought only temporary relief. Until the last four weeks he was able to be about his home. During his last illness, though suffering greatly, he was patient and uncomplaining. In true faith in his Redeemer he awaited the hour of his departure, which came Thursday, February 15th. Quietly as a child in its mother's arms he passed away to the far better life.
He is survived by his faithful wife, four sons, four daughters and six grandchildren. May he rest in peace and the eternal light shine upon him !
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon in the German Lutheran Church, Rev. Grae__ing, of Waverly, pronouncing the oration in English, the Rev. Otto Wappler pronouncing the German sermon. A large concourse of relatives, friends and neighbors were present during the last sad rites. Interment, midst a profusion of fragrant flowers, took place in Monona cemetery.
