Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 15 Feb. 1917. Littleport column.
On Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. J. Liddy, occurred the death of another of Littleport's early settlers, Henry Pust, who has been a resident here for the past forty-eight years, having emigrated here from Germany in the year 1869. Mr. Pust was engaged in the first years of his residence here as a builder and contractor, having learned the carpenter trade in Germany. He also ran a lumber yard here for several years and retired when the present firm of Keve Lumber Co. bought him out and enlarged the stock. He was born March 16th, 1844, and until the past few years had been a hearty, rugged man, vigorous in bodily strength, and up to the time of his death had full control of his mental facilities. His parents, Aug. Christof and Elizabeth Pust, followed him to America two years after he arrived here and continued to reside here until their death. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and a staunch Democrat in politics, a man of good principals, a good husband and father. He also held several public offices during his residence here, all of which he handled with knowledge and forethought, and was at the time of his death a member of the city council. He was also a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America and carried $2,000. in the order. He possessed considerable property, owning his home here, besides a residence property at Guttenberg and a farm in South Dakota. In 1871 Mr. Pust married Sophia Peick, who preceded him to the Great Beyond on October 30th, 1915. To this union were born four children, two boys, Christian and Emil, and two girls, Louisa and Lizzie. Emil resides in Alberta, Canada, and is at this writing enroute to his father's burial, while Christian and Mrs. Louisa Thoday live in Littleport, and Lizzie, who is the wife of A. G. Gurenawalt resides in Hannibal, Iowa. The funeral arrangements have not been completed as we write, but will be held at the Lutheran Church, with burial at the Union cemetery beside his wife, and where sleep other dear ones. Those left have the consolation and sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
