Lester Fenner Carrier was born Sept. 19th, 1826, at Busti, Chautauqua county, N.Y., and died at his home here on Commercial Street, Jan. 6th, 1917. He was the oldest of a family of five children, the others being Chester, Elvira, Louisa and Alvester. His early boyhood was spent on the farm and at the age of seventeen he entered Jamestown Academy. Later he was engaged in the mercantile business in Busti. His marriage to Catherine M. Green occurred in January, 1850, and in May of 1858 they, with their four-year-old daughter Libbie moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa, which has since been his home. For several years Mr. Carrier was associated with M. O. Barnes and B. Bushee in the Mercantile business and later he had a general store on the site now occupied by Newberry Bros. office. When the State Bank was organized he was elected cashier and for twenty-eight years he was connected with the bank in an office capacity. After a long period of failing health Mrs. Carrier died Jan. 8th, 1896. Their daughter, Mrs. Libbie M. Phelps, died at the old home June 5th, 1905. Mr. Carrier joined the Baptist church in Busti when a young man and for nearly sixty years has been an active member of the Baptist church here. One brother, Alvester R. Carrier, of this place, and two grand-children, Lester F. Phelps, of Great Falls, Montana, and Leta L. Phelps, of this place, survive him. The funeral services were held in the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, W. R. Bailey. Interment in the local cemetery.
