Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 30 Dec. 1909. Volga column.
In the death of Frederick Smith, Sr., which occurred at his home in Highland township Friday, December 24th, one of the pioneers of Clayton county passed to his reward. Mr. Smith always enjoyed the best health until his last sickness, which only lasted a few hours. He was born in Willingham, Cambridgeshire, England, Dec. 8th, 1841. He bade adieu to England in 1869 and arrived in Lockport, N.Y., and the following year came to Volga, at which place he has since resided. He was married March 20th, 1872, to Mary R. Duff. To them were born five children, all of whom are living: Fred Smith and Mrs. Marion Pollock, of Volga, Mary J., William R., and Cecelia I., at home, and one brother, J. E. Smith, of Long Beach, Cal. In 1891 he united with the Volga City Presbyterian church, where he has since been an honored and faithful communicant. Of a cheerful disposition and a firm believer in the doctrine of good will to all, the life of Fred Smith has left an inestimable impression for good in the community. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church Sunday morning at eleven o'clock.
