Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Henry Luers, 97, a son of one of the founders of the Community Colony at Communia. Mr. Luers died last Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Strawberry Point nursing home where he had been confined during the past four years. Services were conducted from the Witt funeral home at Elkader. Burial was made in the Clayton cemetery.
Mr. Luers was born at Communia, eight miles southeast of Elkader, on Oct. 16, 1856. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Luers who were among the founders of the Community Colony that was established in 1849. The colony was a communistic effort, on the part of a number of German emigrants, that did not last. In 1852 the colony changed its name to Communia and in the 1880's the experiment was abandoned.
Luers grew to manhood at Communia and was the last survivor of the original colony.
On July 28, 1873, he was married to Louise Venus, a daughter of Louis Venus, another of the colony founders. The first of their six children was born at Communia. In the late 1880's they moved to Clayton where they were to spend the remainder of their family life. Mrs. Luers died 12 years ago.
Mr. Luers is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alma Meehan of Elkader.
