Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 04 Nov. 1909. Strawberry Point column.
James King was born in Canada June 15th, 1840, and died at Strawberry Point, Ia., Oct. 21st, 1909, aged 69 years, four months and 6 days.
He was united in marriage to Miss Phoebe Wright Dec. 9th, 1862, at Durham, Canada.
Four children were born to them: Mrs. Mary Opperman, of Strawberry Point, Thomas, deceased, A. W., of Minneapolis, Minn., and John, of Strawberry Point.
Mr. King and his family came to Iowa in the spring of 1869, and have resided in this vicinity ever since, except a brief time in Fayette County, where he was engaged in trade.
His life was spent in farming, in mechanical labor, and for many years in the lumber trade.
He united with the church late in life, but was faithful in his Christian duties so long as he was able to attend the stated meetings of his church.
Though tardy in actual Christian activities, there never was a time in his life when he entertained the slightest skepticism touching the great and fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. His life labors are ended, his sufferings are over, the realities of the endless rest are his.
The funeral was held Saturday at 1 o'clock from his late residence in the south part of town, Rev. van Swearingen of the Congregational church, assisted by Rev. Piper, of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial took place in the local cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended the family.
