Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 21 Oct. 1909. Strawberry Point column.

Walker Pollard was born at Dorchester, New Hampshire, March 14th, 1830. He was one of a large family of children, of which only one, a brother, Fred A. Pollard, now residing at Lebanon, New Hampshire, survives.

In 1859 he went to the gold fields of California, where he resided till 1864, when he returned to New Hampshire. In 1865 he came to Strawberry Point, where his brother, Wm. P. Pollard, and his sister, Mrs. Alvah Richardson then resided, and which place has ever since been his home. On Sept. 26th, 1866, he was married to Miss Sarah E. Westfall, who survives him. Five children were born to them, of whom three are now living, Mrs. Maud Hady, of Waterloo, Iowa, Grace A. Pollard and Jay M. Pollard, of Strawberry Point. One son Linn, died in infancy, and the youngest daughter, Genie B., died June 17th, 1905.

Since coming to Strawberry Point Mr. Pollard was engaged in the business of farming for a time. Upon the advent of the railroad at this place in 1872, for more than twenty-five years he was a buyer of live stock and for a number of years conducted a general merchandise store. He was one of the promoters of the Strawberry Point State Bank when it was established in 1883 and has continuously served on the board of directors of the bank up to the time of his death.

He was a public spirited citizen and always interested in plans for the advancement of the public welfare. He was the soul of honor, his word always being considered as good as his bond. He was of a sincere religious temperament and in sympathy with all religious and moral movements. He was of a genial, kindly nature and respected by every one.

On Wednesday noon, October 6th, 1909, after a long and painful illness which he endured with remarkable patience and fortitude, surrounded by his family, in the fullness of years, he peacefully crossed the border land into eternity. He leaves to his family the rich inheritance of a good name and a well spent life. A kind and indulgent husband and father, a true man and a most worthy citizen has gone from our midst.

The funeral was held on Friday afternoon from his late residence in the south part of town, Rev. van Swearingen, of the Congregational church, officiating. Burial took place in the family lot in the Strawberry Point cemetery. As respect in which Mr. Pollard was held the business houses closed their places of business during the services.
