John Ecker, an old citizen and an old soldier, died suddenly at his home of heart failure, Wednesday morning, June 9th. He was born July 24th, 1841, in Ashland county, Ohio living there until he was fifteen years old, when with his parents, he came to West Union, Iowa. In May, 1861, he enlisted in Co. F, 3rd Iowa Infantry, being among the first to offer himself to his country's cause. He went through the campaign, was wounded in the battle of Shiloh April 7th, 1863, at the battle of Atlanta on July 21st, and again on July 22nd 1864. He served through the entire war, and was mustered out at Louisville, Ky., and discharged at Davenport, Iowa, July 22nd, 1865. At the close of the war he returned to West Union, coming to McGregor soon after. He took a year's course in Commercial school, and then began work as machinist in the C.M. & St.P. R.R. shops at this place, a position he held until about eighteen months ago, when his health failed. He was married to Miss Mary Gruver, of Ashland county, Ohio Oct. 20th, 1867. Seven children were born to them, four of whom are living, Mrs. Ed Scott, Mrs. Bert Hulz, Chas. and John Ecker.
