Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 May 1909. Osterdock column.

Thursday occurred the death of John Smith, caused by consumption, at the age of 25 years, 4 months and 8 days, after a lingering illness of two years or more. Interment was in Bethel cemetery. A father and mother, two brothers and two sisters are left to mourn his loss. John was a popular young man and had a host of friends.
