Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 20 May 1909. Guttenberg column.
Irene, aged six years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis DeSotel, residing in the south part of town, died Monday after an illness of two weeks. It is supposed she was poisoned from eating too many walnuts and butternuts that were stored away before being sufficiently dried, and gathered before ripe. Dr. Beyer, the attending physician, did all that could possibly be done to save the little girl. Dr. C. W. Duffin, of this place, and Dr. Fitz-Jerrel, of Elkport, were called in consultation, but their efforts were of no avail and the little spirit winged its flight to Him who gave it. Melvin, her 4 year-old brother, also lies dangerously low. Mr. and Mrs. DeSotel have the sympathy of the entire community, as theirs, indeed, has been a sad lot. The funeral was held Wednesday at 9:00 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic church, with interment in the new Catholic cemetery.
