Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 04 Mar. 1909.

Alexander Henry died at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 17, 1909, at his home in Cox Creek township. Had he lived but three more days he would have reached his 89th milestone. He had been in failing health for some time, but his death came as unexpected as he had been accustomed to sitting in his chair during the day time and was only confined to his bed the day before his death and talked with his folks only a few hours before he passed away.

Alexander Henry was born at Grove End, County Antrim, Ireland, Feb. 20, 1820. He moved to Quebec in 1844, thence to New York in 1849, where he indulged in various kinds of employment, mostly contracting and masonry. He was married to Anna M. Carr at Ellicotville, N.Y., Sept. 12, 1854, came to Iowa in 1867 making the trip overland from Dubuque to Garden Prairie then locating in Sperry township, later purchasing a farm in Cox Creek township, where he lived until his death.

Iowa, in those days was quite a wilderness, but by hard work and energy, he together with his loving wife cleared up a farm, though they endured many hardships. They struggled along for a number of years, finally building them a good home. Mr. Henry was a man who loved his home and family, and the close of such a life merits the highest praise, and from all who knew and loved him in life, there goes out the sigh of sorrow for his death.

He was the last of the old settlers in that community, and a large concourse of friends were present to pay their last tribute to him.

Thirteen children were born to this union, one having died in infancy. The following still remain: M. W., J. M., William, Mrs. Austin Thyne, Mrs. Mike O'Brien and Rose of this community, Mrs. Mike Dinan of Littleport, Mrs. Dennis Malone of Lamont, P. A. Henry of Hastngs, Neb., A. L. of Spencer, R. P. and M.C., of White Bluffs, Wash, all of whom with the exception of the two latter were here in attendance at the funeral, and together with the loving mother and wife remain to mourn their loss and have the sympathy of all.

Funeral was held last Friday morning from Sacred Heart church of which he had been a lifelong member, services conducted by Father Hartigan. The choir sang a Requiem Mass. Burial took place at Cox Creek cemetery. The pall bearers were John Connolly, Jos. McDermott, John Alderson, Peter and James Dunn and Patrick Moyna.

Repuiescat in Peace.
