Elkader Register, Thur., 25 Feb. 1909. Volga column.
Jeanette Probert was born at Muir Kirk, Ayershire, Scotland, Jan. 20th, 1827, and departed this life Feb. 17th, 1909, at ten o'clock, thus bringing her earthly life to a close at the ripe age of 82 years and 27 days. She was united in marriage to Matthew Ewing Nov. 22nd, 1850, with whom she lived fifty-four happy years. They came to the United States in 1852 and settled near Pittsburg, in which vicinity they lived five years and then moved to Illinois, where they resided for two years. In the spring of 1859 they moved to Clayton County, where she has lived ever since. Mr. Ewing preceded her to the great beyond April 14th, 1904. Mrs. Ewing was the fourth oldest of a family of eleven children and two survive her, John Probert, of Pittsburg, and Mrs. Wm. Duff, of Highland township. Mrs. Ewing led a long life of Christian service as a member of the M.E. church. Her Christianity was shown daily in her walk of life. Always a kind word and a pleasant smile. In the loss of Mrs. Ewing Volga loses one of her oldest members. Her last sickness was but a few days, it seemed to be only the failing of life's machinery to perform its allotted work, and thus called the good and faithful servant home. The funeral was held Friday from the M.E. church, Rev. Dugger officiating.
