Funeral services for Charles Schmid, former long-time prominent business man of Guttenberg, were conducted by the Rev. Father J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church here Friday morning, with internment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Mr. Schmid passed away at his home in Guttenberg Wednesday forenoon at the age of 72 years. He had been ill for some time previous to his death.
Mr. Schmid was born in Ebinge_n, Germany, Sept. 19, 1862, where he received his early education and served in the German army for three years.
When 28 years of age he came to America, settling at Detroit, Mich., and Peoria, Ill., for a time, where he was employed in meat packing houses. Later he came to Guttenberg, where he was employed at the M. Gilbertz meat market for six years, then going to Dubuque, where he purchased and operated the Herman Knoernschild meat market, and, after residing at Dubuque for six years, he returned to Guttenberg to reside, where the remainder of his ambitious life was spent. For 17 years he was a member of the local firm of Gilbertz & Schmid, local meat market proprietors and later was engaged in operating a meat market here in partnership with Harry Stoeffler for about a year. Of late years he has been retired. He was married at Dubuque to Miss Anna Wolter of Guttenberg, on Sept. 18, 1900. Mr. Schmid was a public spirited man. His passing is deeply mourned by a host of friends and business associates to whom he had endeared himself by his honesty, his loyalty and his great sense of public duty.
He is survived by his widow; two sons, Charles and Wolter, of Guttenberg; a brother and sister in Germany and many other relatives and friends, who will all sadly miss him.
