Clayton County Register, Thur., 02 Aug. 1934.
Mrs. Elizabeth Thein, wife of A. H. Thein and daughter of Michael and Sophia Stegner, died July 24, 1934, at the home of her son, Peter J. Thein, near Garnavillo, with whom she had made her home for the past seven years and where she was most tenderly cared for during her long illness and old age. She was bedfast for the last 17 months of her life. Had she lived just two months longer, she would have been 80 years old. She was born at Baltimore, Md., Sept. 24, 1854. In the year 1857 she came to Iowa with her parents and settled near Elkport. In 1858 the family moved to Colesburg, which was her home up to the time of her marriage to A. H. Thein, of Elkport. To this union eight children were born: Two daughters, Margaret and Carolyn (who have preceded their mother in death) and six sons, Joseph, Jacob, Peter, John, Adam and Michael. Her husband preceded her in death a number of years ago. At 10:45 p.m. on July 24th, the Angel of Death called her to the Great Beyond. She died with the last sacraments of the Holy Catholic church, receiving her last communion on the morning previous to her death, from the Rev. Father H. Scharphoff of Garnavillo. She died peacefully, without pain and with a smile upon her lips. Her son Peter, and wife and daughter, Mrs. Marion Dutka, and son, Henry A. Thein, were at her bedside when she passed away. May God grant her the blessing that she may rest in peace.
She is survived by six sons, Joseph, Jacob, Adam, of near Elkport, Peter of near Garnavillo, and Michael of Tre_ra, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Sommers, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Dora Stegner of Haxerhill, Iowa, and numerous other relatives and friends by whom she will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. Scharphoff at St. Joseph's Catholic church at Garnavillo, on Friday morning, with burial in the Elkport cemetery. The Father Goetzinger of Garber conducted the services at the cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended. The pallbearers were her six sons.
