Clayton County Register, Thur., 15 Mar. 1934.
Jacob Sherbonda, Sr., aged 97, died Tuesday night in his log cabin home north of Monona. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon from the C. G. Schultz funeral home, with burial in the Smithfield cemetery.
His wife preceded him in death. He was the father of thirteen children. A daughter and family, Mrs. Ed. Hargesheimer, lived with him in the log cabin, the home where most of his life was spent. He was a pioneer in the true sense of the word, building the two-room log cabin with a leanto. He was born in Pennsylvania but came to Iowa when only three years old so life on the farm is the only life he has ever known. Years ago stage coaches made daily trips past the farm and indians pitched their tepees along the nearby Yellow river, where they dug ginseng. The simplicity of the life he led is the secret of his longevity.
