Elkader Register, Thur., 28 Dec. 1905. McGregor column.
The community was shocked Friday morning by the news that Henry Bergman had hung himself. Facts are now being told which show he was at times demented, and there is no doubt that he was temporarily insane when he committed the awful deed of self destruction. A wife and three small children mourn, together with his father, three sisters and five brothers. Deceased was a man liked by everybody, of untarnished record and upright character. He was one of the proprietors of Bergman Bros. Meat Market, and half owner of the large double store occupied by the Kramers. He was forty-two years old, and was united in marriage to Lizzie Kuchenbecker about twelve years ago. The funeral was held Sunday and was largely attended, the M.W.A. turning out in force.
