Elkader Register, Thur., 09 Nov. 1905. Garnavillo column.
James Growney was born Jan. 6th, 1821, at Old Castle, Ireland. He came to this country in 1847 and resided for eleven years in Easton, Penn. During this time he was employed at the iron works. In 1850 he was united in marriage to Ellen Gelson, at Newark, N.J. Eight years later he located on a farm in Clayton twp., and retired to Clayton in the year 1900. A short time ago he contracted pneumonia, and, although he had the best of attendance, the progress of the disease could not be checked, owing mainly to his advanced age. With his bedside surrounded by his wife and children, he breathed his last Oct. 31st, as peacefully as a child falling to sleep. He was a sincere Christian and found much consolation in his religion. He always had a kind word for everyone and was as open-hearted as he was noble and manly. After a long and useful life he has gone to his reward, honored and respected by a very large circle of friends. Funeral services took place Thursday forenoon in St. Joseph's Catholic church, Father Raedler officiating. Interment in the Catholic cemetery west of town. Of the nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Growney, the following survive their father: Owen, at Stanley, Wis.; James, at Guttenberg; Mrs. Mary Meder, of Clayton twp.; and John and Marcella at home. Besides the wife and children there are also eight grandchildren left to mourn.
