Elkader Register, Thur., 26 Oct. 1905. Garnavillo column.
Our little town experienced another calamity, Saturday, in the suicide of August Schenk. It was concluded that he must have committed the act on Thursday, because no one had seen him since then and the horses seemed very much starved. Their uneasiness in the barn attracted the attention of Chas. Clair, who investigated and found that the animals had already eaten great parts of their mangers. With help the house was searched and upon ascending the stairway his body was seen with a rope around the neck and hanging to the clothes rack, the knees touching the floor. Burial took place Sunday morning, Rev. Braun officiating.
