Karl Wilhelm Rehberg was born Jan. 14th, 1843, in Sielhorst Roehden, Kingdom of Prussia. May 10th, 1868, he married Fredericke Justina Rutter, who was born Nov. 27, 1836, in Hanover. They left their native country in 1871 to come to America. Their first home was a farm in the vicinity of Clayton Centre. After leaving this place the deceased was employed as hired hand with farmers near Garnavillo for fifteen years, after which time he purchased a farm in Buck Creek, on which he resided until about a week before his death. In 1903, after weeks of illness, his wife died and of the five children born to them, but two survive, viz., Margeretha Sophia, born May 5th, 1873, married to Mr. Sass, residing in Mendon twp., Maria Carolina born Sept. 23, 1875, married to H. Schoeve, residing near Pleasant Ridge. Deceased was of a robust constitution and always enjoyed good health until about a month ago, when he was taken sick with dropsy. Medical skill did not stay the disease and he departed this life Sept. 25, 1905, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Schoeve, having reached the age of 62 years, 8 months and 11 days. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday by Rev. Wm. Braun in St. Paul's Lutheran church. Burial in the family lot in the old cemetery. Another pilgrim gone to that home from whence no traveler has yet returned.
