Elkader Register, Thur., 30 Mar. 1905. Bear Creek column.

On Wednesday, March 22nd, at one o'clock, occurred the death of an old and highly respected citizen, Chas. Waterman, Sr. He was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1844, and emigrated to this country with his parents when quite young. One year was spent in Dubuque, after which they came to Elkport, which since has been his home. He was united in marriage with Lena Musfeldt about thirty-one years ago. To this union were born twelve children, four sons, Henry residing in Michigan, Charles, George and Eddie still at home, and eight daughters, Mrs. Mary McSperrins of Elkader; Mrs. Lizzie Kruse at Guttenberg; Minnie, Clara, Lena, Laura, Bertha and Alma, all at home, are left with their mother, to mourn his death, besides three grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. H. Becker, and two brothers, Henry of Luzerne, Ia., and William of East Elkport, and many other relatives and friends. He was a kind father and husband and will be greatly missed by all. The funeral services were held Saturday from the Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Hertel, who preached a very touching sermon which was largely attended.

He has gone from his near ones, his
children, his wife,
Whom he willingly toiled for and loved
as his life;
Oh, God, how mysterious and how
strange are thy ways;
To take from us this loved one in the
best of his days.
