John Kramer was born in Wirtemberg, Germany, May 26th, 1837. He came to America with his parents in the year 1854 and settled at Galena, Illinois.
He learned the butcher's trade, at which business he worked for a number of years, until removing to Iowa where he engaged in farming. He has been a resident of Iowa for the last forty years.
July 7th, 1864, he was married to Miss Barabara Wise, a young lady of fine education, culture and refinement. She passed away nearly three years ago. Ten children came into the home, two dying in their infancy, the remaining eight are John H., and George E. of Strawberry Point; William and Mrs. Mary M. Pilgrim, of Edgewood; Mrs. Lena Donner, of Dubuque; Frederick of this place; Elizabeth M. who is still at home, and Mrs. Anna A. Cherry, of Waterloo, all of whom were present at the funeral.
Mr. Kramer enlisted in the army June 11, 1861, and was honorably discharged for disability Feb. 26th, 1862. He died Aug. 26th, 1912, aged 75 years and 3 months.
In the earlier years of his life he was an active, energetic, man of affairs, striving to do his share of the world's work. Neighborly and obliging, he held the estimation of his fellow citizens. For the past few years he has lived quietly at his home in Strawberry Point.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O.M. van Sweariagen.
"As we travel down the valley one by one,
Faith and Hope will make more bright the setting sun,
Charity will ever find for us the way,
To that realm of broader and more perfect day."~The Mail-Press, Thursday, August 29, 1912; pg 1
