Elkader Register, Thur., 01 Dec. 1904. Garnavillo column.
On Wednesday morning, Nov. 23rd, occurred the death of Mrs. W. S. Shepherd, Sr., at her home near Garnavillo. She was born June 2nd, 1841, at Sandy Creek, Venango Co., Penn., and with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Trunkey, came to Iowa among the first settlers, and has since lived here. She often spoke of having read the first newspaper printed in Clayton county.
In 1858 she was united in marriage with Wm. Shepherd and settled in a home adjoining the parental farm. To their union were born twelve children, all of whom, with the aged husband, survive her and mourn the loss of a faithful wife and loving mother. She also leaves three brothers and twenty-three grandchildren. In December 1900 she suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she never fully recovered. Since that time she has been confined to her home where her place so suddenly made vacant, nothing can ever fill. Death came peacefully as the result of a second stroke of paralysis, She gave herself wholly to Christ in her girlhood days, was a member of the Christian church and ever lived a beautiful and inspiring life for her Savior. The funeral occurred Saturday morning. The services were held at the home, Rev. Francis, of McGregor, officiating, and the burial was in the new cemetery at Garnavillo.
