William Gruell was born April 14th, 1846, in Luhni____orf, Kreis Greiszwald (Regirungs Lezirk Stralsund). When growing into manhood he learned the Mason's trade, he later enlisted in the army. In 1870 and 1871 he fought in the battle at Gravaotte, also seven others of minor importance. On the 5th of May, 1872, he was married to Christine Moeller. Three weeks later he and his wife emigrated to America and after a month's journey took up abode in Garnavillo. Here he continued masonry for a number of years and later began farming north of town. He was a prosperous farmer and enjoyed good health until the past year when he became a victim of asthma. Death relieved him Nov. __st. Burial took place on Thanksgiving afternoon. A very large number of friends were present at the funeral and the floral offerings were beautiful. In addition to Rev. Braun's regular services, Mr. Gifford, of Littleport, made fitting remarks at the cemetery, in behalf of the M.B.A., of which deceased was a member. A wife, five children, of whom three are married; three sisters, viz, Mrs. Michael Schmidt, residing in town, and two sisters in Germany, and seven grandchildren survive to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and a kind father and brother.
