Mrs. Elizabeth Maurer, nee Braun, was born March 22nd, 1831, in Kronenberg, Canton Santerreeden in Koulgruch, Brier_. Her parents bade the old home farewell on the 24th of April 1833 to sail for America. After a very stormy voyage of sixty-three days they arrived in Baltimore and later in August they, with their acquaintances, the Maurers and Bosels, went to New Bremen, Ohio, for permanent homes. On Nov. 9th, 1847, Elizabeth Braun, the subject of this sketch, was married to Peter Maurer, and later both came to Garnavillo to reside. On Sept. 18th, 1877, death bereaved the family of the good husband and father. The union was with eleven children, three of which died in early youth, viz: Carl and Peter in Ohio, and John in Garnavillo. Besides these the aged mother was deeply bereaved in the death of her son Jacques, who was called home at the age of 44 years.
Those surviving are Mrs. Wilhelmina Brandt, residing at Garnavillo; August Maurer, Beloit, Wis.; Mrs. Lizzie Boesche, Fort Recovery, Ohio; Mrs. Mathilda Fritz, Garnavillo; Mrs. Emma Brumm, Dubuque; Mrs. Clementine Adams, Muncie, Ind.; Auguste Rantzow, Garnavillo: also twenty-five grandchildren, two great-grandsons, two brothers, viz: Peter Braun, in New Bremen, Ohio, and Adam Braun, in Columbus, Ohio, and many other relatives and friends.
Her death occurred at ten o'clock Saturday morning, Sept. 17th. Funeral services took place Tuesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Braun, Rev. Sommerlad making fitting remarks at the grave.
The floral tributes were many and beautiful and showed the sincere regard the community entertained for this noble soul.
