Elkader Register, Thur., 30 June 1904. North McGregor column.
Mrs. Sarah E. Kaufman was born March 16th, 1849, and died June 28th, 1904. Sarah E. Kivelahan was born in Brownsville, Pa., and with her parents came west when a child, settling at Harper's Ferry. May 9th, 1882, at the church of the Immaculate Conception at Harper's Ferry, she was united in marriage to Henry E. Kaufman, Rev. Father J. Nelson officiating. For twenty-two years Mrs. Kaufman has been a resident of this place, where none knew her but to honor and respect her for her kindness toward all. She was an earnest Christian woman, with charity toward all. She has lived a life of devotion in her family, where for seven years she tenderly cared for an invalid father, until last December, when God, who plans each day, called the father to his eternal home. Nov. 17th, 1902, Death took from her side her beloved husband. She had been in poor health for some time, but bore her suffering in silence, until three weeks ago, when her strength gave out and she was obliged to go to the Clark hospital for treatment. There was no help for the disease, a cancer, being beyond all medical help. Her only child, her daughter, Lucille, will mourn deeply the loss that has befallen her, and to her sincere friends extend all sympathy. Funeral services were held from St. Mary's church Thursday morning, Rev. Father O'Donnel giving the last rites of the church to one who in life was a faithful follower of the church. Many beautiful floral emblems were given by friends. The following relatives came: W. T. Brennan and Mrs. Cleary, of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kaufman and Joe Kaufman, of Dubuque.
