Elkader Register, Thur., 26 May 1904. Garnavillo column.
Last Thursday while on his cream route and as usual stopping to partake of the noonday meal at the home of his brother, John Scherf, residing on the D. Beherns farm in Buck Creek, Wm. Scherf, while preparing to continue his route was suddenly kicked by one of his horses which injuries, although all that medical skill could do for him, proved fatal by relieving Mr. Scerf from his intense sufferings Saturday morning at four o'clock at the age of 53 years. The remains were taken to his home from whence the funeral occurred Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Braun. A wife and daughter are left to mourn his sudden and untimely departure.
The veil twixt earth and heaven,
A breath might lift aside,
We breathe one air, beloved;
We follow one dear guide,
Passed into open vision,
Out of our mist and rain,
Then sees't how sorrow, blossoms
How peace is won from pain.
