Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Feb. 1904.
After an illness of over a year Lyman Tyler passed away to the great beyond at his residence in this place, at 1:30 Wednesday morning, Feb. 17th, 1904, in the 76th year of his age. He was born at Watertown, Jefferson county, N.Y., March 16th, 1828, the son of Aaron and Betsy Bassett Tyler.
Mr. Tyler's youth was spent in the east living at various places in New York and Ohio, and he was married to Melissa E. Shippee at Fredonia, N.Y., in 1848. In 1854 he came to Clayton county, where he has since lived with the exception of the winters of 1865 and 1866, which were spent in Minnesota. His first wife died May 31st, 1878, having been blind for 17 years before her death, and his only child by this marriage died May 18th, 1865.
He was married to Delila Munger in Read township, Dec. 28, 1874, and to this marriage have been born two children, Maud Inez and Henry Lyman, who with Mrs. Tyler are left to mourn his death. Mr. Tyler worked for Libby & Baker, who were in the furniture business in the early days of Elkader, then for Fielding Snedigar and for H. C. Grotewohl at turning. The firm of Davis & Tyler, contractors and builders, composed of O. F. Davis and Lyman Tyler was formed in 1868 and continued until old age compelled them to lay aside the active duties of their trade. Their handiwork can be found in many of the substantial buildings of the town and its vicinity.
By his departure the family lose a loved husband and father and the community a respected citizen. His long continued illness had reconciled him to the thought of death, and he was anxious to be relieved of his suffering. Of a family of fourteen, one brother, Jesse, of Rochester, N.Y., survives him.
The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with services at the Congregational church.
