Elkader Register, Thur., 28 Jan. 1904. Luana column.
Matthew S. Lytle, son of Matthew S. and Jane Lytle, was born in Erie county, Penn., January 1836, and died at his home near Luana Monday night, Jan. 19th, 1904, aged 68 years.
He moved to Iowa in 1855 with his father's family, settling near Luana on a farm.
In 1865 he married Miss Josephine Oathout, and moved onto a farm, where they have since resided.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lytle, seven of whom survive: Mrs. Janie Dunning, Luana; Mrs. Ida Bender, Luana; Frank and Mrs. Alice Willman, of Superior, Iowa; Jessie, John and Pearl, who are living at home. Two brothers, John and Henry, and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Eno, survive.
The deceased spent the greater part of his lifetime in this community and has gone out from among us without having left an enemy as far as known. A good honest citizen, respected by all, loved by his neighbors, who have lost a true friend and advisor. The family have the sympathy of the entire community, who know that the bereaved wife and children have lost a kind husband and father.
The funeral services were held at the Monona M.E. church on Thursday and the sermon was preached by Rev. Gibbens, of Luana, assisted in the services by Rev. Brown, of the Monona M.E. church. Rev. Gibbens spoke with the greatest kindness and sympathy to the bereaved family and friends and his words could scarcely help bringing some comfort with them, spoken as they were in sympathy and love. The Epworth Leaguers and other friends of the family showed their sympathy by decorating the church with choice flowers and plants, and although Thursday proved to be very stormy the funeral was well attended by sympathizing friends and neighbors.
