Elkader Register, 07 Jan. 1904.
This community was very much shocked on Sunday morning on hearing of the sudden death of Mrs. John Lynch, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. Rogers, at ten o'clock Saturday night. Mrs. Lynch appeared in her usual health up to the very moment of her death. Mrs. Rogers was assisting her mother to her bed when she suddenly complained of great pain in the region of her heart and before she could be lain down upon the bed she had expired in her daughter's arms.
Mrs. John Lynch was one of our most highly respected and esteemed old ladies, a devoted wife, loving mother and kind neighbor. She has gone from us in her old age honored and respected by all who knew her and she will be missed and mourned not only by her kindred and friends but by the people of Clayton county.
Anna Boland was born Sept. 10th, 1830 in County Monighan, Ireland. She was the eldest of twelve children. At the age of 22 she came to America and remained in Boston eight years. She was united in marriage May 1856, to John Lynch, and in June the same year they came to Clayton county where they remained a short time when they went to Minnesota while that region was yet a territory. Staying a short time there they returned to Iowa where her husband purchased a large farm in Read township, where she resided until the death of her son Charles, Aug. 27th, 1900. After the death of her son she removed to this city and spent the remainder of her days with her daughter where she died. she was the mother of eight children, five of whom with three brothers and one sister survive her. Three children with her husband have preceded her to the grave. Those that survive are: Michael, of Read; Dr. J. W., of Lawler; Mrs. W. Shekleton and Mrs. M. Rogers, of this place; and Mrs. F. Shekleton, of Lawler.
The funeral on Tuesday was held at St. Joseph's church being largely attended. The services consisted of a Solemn Requiem Mass, Rev. Father Minogue, of Elkport, high celebrant; Rev. Father Hetherington, deacon; Rev. Father Reilly, sub-deacon. Rev. Father Hetherington delivered a very impressive sermon during which he paid just tribute to the departed. The interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery beside her husband and children.
