Elkader Register, Thur., 25 Dec. 1902.
At the old homestead in Highland twp., Monday evening, Dec. 22nd, 1902, after an illness of two weeks, occurred the death of John Boland, in the 88th year of his age.
John Boland was born in County Clare, Ireland, June 20th, 1815, where he grew to manhood and in 1845 married. In 1840 with their eldest son they came to America, settling at Boston, Mass. In 1861 they came to Clayton county, settling near Littleport. About 1864 they moved to the farm in Highland township where Mr. Boland died. Mrs. Boland died April 6th, 1900. Seven sons and one daughter were born to them, of whom only four sons, Jas. P., John L., Thos. A., and Chris M., all of Highland, survive to mourn the loss of both father and mother.
Deceased was an honorable man, noted for his jolly, good nature and social qualities. He was a devoted Christian and endeavored to live in accord with the teachings of his church. As old age has crept upon him he has been confined to his home and at last has been gathered to his eternal rest. May he rest in peace.
The funeral was held Wednesday morning, services being held at St. Joseph's church.
(Note: Transcribed as published. The date of marriage and emigration seem at odds.)
