Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Dec. 1902. McGregor column.
Wm. C. Austin, the pioneer liveryman, died Tuesday noon of peritonitis, after an illness of only two days. Sunday he was out and attended to his work, but complained of not feeling well. Dr. J. H. Griffin attended him and his Masonic brethren assisted his wife in caring for him. He has always been a well known citizen, friendly and sociable, especially delighting in the companionship of children. He leaves a widow, an invalid and alone, their only child having died in infancy. The Masons will have charge of the funeral. This is the third death recently of men who came here in the fifties and have helped to make the history of the town and vicinity, Jos. McHose, Geo. L. Bass and W. C. Austin.
