Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Aug. 1902.
Mrs. Olive Scovel died at the home of her son Albert Wednesday, July 30th. The services were held at the M.E. church, of this city August 1st., at 10 o'clock, and the remains laid to rest beside kindred dust in Cox Creek cemetery, at the good age of 87 years and 22 days.
Mrs. Scovel was born in Pennsylvania, July 8, 1815, and was married to Nathaniel S. Scovel at Cincinnati, O., in 1831.
Twelve children was born of this union, six sons and six daughters, five of whom survive her. Henry Jasper, Newell, Iowa; A. Scovel and Charles N., Elkader; Edward D., Sheridan, Wyoming; Annie E., wife of E. R. Munger, of this city.
Ten of the children reared large families, two died while young. There are 55 grandchildren and fully as many great-grandchildren. Mr. Scovel died in 1862 leaving the widow to care for a large family.
She became a member of the M.E. church at the age of 16 years, and during her married life, had resided in ten different states, but always true to her profession taking her letter and affiliating with some church.
She came from Kansas to Elkader in 1883 to spend her last years with her children, being old she had little to do now but make ready for the call of the master. She left unmistakable evidence of her perfect trust in the Savior and prayed Him not to tarry to long. She rejoiced in the Psalms, lived on the promises of Christ and His Apostles in the New Testament and died in hope.
