Elkader Register, Thur., 02 Jan. 1902.
Catherine Burnham, wife of Francis G. Cook, died at her home near Farmersburg, Dec. 24th, 1901, after a brief illness. Three children join their father in mourning their loss. Her death was the result of the wearing out of nature, rather than of disease. She was born in Milford, N.H., July 14, 1822. On Oct. 30th, 1843, she was married to Francis G. Cook, at Milford, Mass. She was one of the oldest residents of Clayton county, having settled with her husband here in 1850. She was well aware of the conflicts, difficulties and struggles of an early pioneer life. We see her rocking the cradle and doing her home work, standing by her husband in every conflict, calm, patient, loving, trustful, heroic. We can look and look through the mists of three-fourths of a century of toil, and allow our imaginations to call up scenes that must have transpired, the battles which we know were fought, and the victories which we know were won. She had faith in God, her record is in heaven and in the hearts of dear ones. The funeral services, which were deeply impressive, were held at her late home on Thursday, Dec. 26th, attended by her husband, children, grandchildren, brother and a large company of old friends and neighbors.
The funeral services were conducted by C. B. Wright, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Elkader. Interment was made in the Farmersburg cemetery.
