Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Aug. 1879.
DIED - At his residence at Communia, Saturday morning, Aug. 2nd, 1879, of cancer of the face, Michael Baumann, aged 70 years, 4 months and 3 days.
Michael Baumann was born at H__rdt, near Rothenburg, March 30th, 1809. In 1846, he followed the general impulse and emigrated to America, first settling in New Jersey, moving from there to Philadelphia, where he joined the Communia League, having for its object the colonization of the west, and to procure homes for its members. In 1852, with others, he came to Clayton county, and settled at Communia, which was being settled under the directions of the League. Here he remained until the society was broken up, when he secured a homestead, and has lived there ever since. He was known to all as an honest man, and one whose "word was as good as his bond."
Although his death was not unexpected, yet it has cast a shadow of sorrow over his many friends and neighbors, among whom he had labored for many years, and they mourn his death, as that of an old veteran falling out of the ranks, which are being so rapidly diminished by the reaper - death.
He leaves a wife and two daughters, one of whom is married to Jansen Tieden, of Communia.
