William Goetz has passed to the great beyond, was the sad news that was given to our citizens at about 5 o'clock Monday afternoon. The deceased, William John Goetz, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 20, 1841, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Goetz. He came to Guttenberg with his parents in October 1854, and grew to manhood in this city. He was married to Miss Mary Luther on July 4, 1867, and five children were born to them, Harry, Edwin and William are dead, and Charles A. and Lillian S., survive their father. Mrs. Goetz died January 27, 1877. He was married to Miss Ida Schutt_ on May 29, 1881, and three children was the result of this union, George, dead, Arthur H. and Amelia S. are living. William Goetz in company with his brother Ed., conducted a saw mill and lumber yard in this city for several years. In 1889 Mr. Goetz removed to Waukon, and for a number of years conducted a lumber yard at that place. In the spring of 1898 he returned with his children to this city and resided here to the time of his death. Mr. Goetz has been ill from dropsy for seven weeks but not until two weeks ago did his illness take a serious turn. He was a member of Prairie La Porte lodge, No. 147, A.F. & A.M., and the Iowa Workmen. He leaves besides his children, three brothers, Ed. of this city, Charles E., of Sioux City, and George W., of Postville. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be conducted under auspices of the Mason order. Mr. Goetz was a man who had a large acquaintance throughout this and Allamakee counties and always had the respect of all who knew him. The Press joins with his large circle of friends in extending their sympathy to the bereaved children and brothers. May his eternal sleep be peaceful.- Guttenberg Press.
