Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Nov. 1899. Elkport nd Vicinity column.
DIED- Thursday evening Nov. 17, 1899, M. W. Lovett aged 83 years. Mr. Lovett had been sick some time with heart and kidney trouble and owing to his advanced age he was unable to withstand the ravages of the disease. Mr. Lovett came to Clayton county over 50 years ago and settled within 3 miles of Elkport where he has since resided. He was well known throughout Clayton county and was an honorable and upright man. Through his frugality he amassed a large fortune, being undoubtedly the richest farmer in Clayton county. He owns stock in the Elkader State Bank besides several valuable farms. Many a poor man has good cause to regret the death of Mr. Lovett, many a man he has helped that was on the down grade and by his advice and help has lifted and built him up. Mr. Lovett was a kind hearted and good man, once a friend always a friend. The funeral took place Sunday and was attended by the largest turnout of people that we ever seen at a funeral - 125 teams followed the remains of our departed friend to their last resting place. Rev. Hirst officiating. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction. May he rest in peace.
(There followed a lengthy poem.)
Note: burial is in Section B, Brown cemetery
