Elkader Register, Thur., 03 Nov. 1899. Garnavillo Department column.

Saturday morning, Oct. 28th, 1899, after a long illness, occurred the death of John Henry Kuenzel. He was born July 29th 1827, in Reban, Konigreich, Bavaria, Germany, the fourth child of a family of four boys and two girls. He came to the United States with his parents in 1838, arriving at New Orleans on New Year's day. From there they continued their journey by boat to Cincinnati. They went to New Bremen, Ohio, where his parents settled. On Feb. 20th, 1850, Mr. Kuenzel was united in marriage with Adelade Mohrman. In 1853 he came to Garnavillo and engaged in harness making. In 1854 with B. F. Schroeder he built the Valley mill on Buck Creek, in which he was interested until a few years ago.

Mr. Kuenzel was a member of the Turn Verein since its organization in 1869, and also a active member of the German Lutheran church and one of its first directors. In 1872 together with B. F. Schroeder, Helm Brandt, Wm. Oelke and H. H. Schumacher he organized the Garnavillo Friedhof Verein by which we have one of the finest cemeteries in the county.

His beloved wife died while on a visit to New Bremen, Ohio, Oct. 24, 1892. To them were born ten children, eight of whom, four sons and four daughters, survive. A younger brother and sister living at New Bremen survive him and mourn his loss.

Deceased was one of Garnavillo's most respected citizens, and during his long residence among us had drawn to himself a large circle of friends.

The funeral held Tuesday afternoon was largely attended by friends and neighbors who came to pay their respects to the memory of a worthy man.

(Same paper, date and earlier in this column is noted: Hy. Kuenzel and family, of Fairbank, Iowa, E. C. Kuenzel of Lincoln, Neb., and B. F. Kuenzel, of Cleveland, Ohio, are here to attend the funeral of their father.)

(Also see the WPA entry for Johan H. Kuenzel, 1827 - 28 Oct. 1899, buried in Garnavillo cemetery, and IGPP gravestone photo.)
