Caroline Dory was born in Quebec, Canada. Later moved with her parents to Wisconsin, where in 1847 she was married to Charles E. Smith, who in 1849 started to the gold fields of California, and died before reaching his destination. One son, C.D. Smith of Jackson, CA was born to this union.
In 1854, in Illinois, she was married to George Coon, coming to Iowa the same year, settling on a farm North of Luana, where Mr. Coon died in 1892. There were nine children born to this union, three of them survived the mother. J.W. Coon of Waukon, Alphonso of Salisburg, Md., and Mary Plant, Jacksonville, California.
Mrs. Coon was a woman of excellent character, a member of the United Brethren Church, a kind hearted mother and neighbor, respected by all with whom she had mingled for fifty years.
Except for a period of about two years, when she and her son homesteaded in South Dakota, she made her home near Luana until last Nov., when she moved with her son Alphonso to Maryland.
Although advanced in age she retained her health until about two weeks ago, when she was stricken with paralysis which terminated in her death. The remains were brought to Luana and services were held in the Hardin Church, Monday, the 20th. Rev. Penn of the United Brethren Church of Castalia, assisted by Rev. Schepple of the M.E. Church, conducted services. Burial took place in the Hardin cemetery.
CORRECTION: Caroline birth place is Ontario, Canada.
