DANIEL BICKEL
died at the home of his son, J. S. Bickel, on Sunday, Oct. 8th, 1899, at the age of 82 years and 4 days. He was born at Neusig, province KurHesse, Germany, Aug. 4, 1817. He came to America in 1846, and after living one year in Ohio, settled in Giard township, in 1847, and has resided there up to the time of his demise, which occurred at his old home. His wife preceded him about a year ago. The subject of this sketch by hard work and frugal methods had accumulated quite a comfortable property, having retired from active life some twenty years ago. Deceased leaves three sons and three daughters, J. S. of Froelich, Mrs. John Froelich and Mary S., of Dubuque; A. W., of Schaller, Ia.; Ferd of Waterloo, Iowa, and Mrs. Prof. J. Bass, of Rochester, N.Y., besides numerous grand and great-grandchildren. D. F. Bickel, of Giard, and J. D. Bickel, of McGregor, are nephews of the deceased.
Deceased was highly respected in the community in which he so long resided as was shown by the large concourse of neighbors and friends who attended the last sad rites on Tuesday, held at the German M.E. church at Giard, of which he was one of the original members. The services were conducted by Rev. Hartge, resident minister.
(Note: It appears the newspaper in calculating his age at death erred by 2 months or forgot to add those two months to his age at death.)
