At his home in North Buena Vista, on Sept. 16th, 1899, occurred the death of Ernest Merkle in the 68th year of his age. He was born at Oagendorf, Wartenberg, Germany, July 7th, 1832. He came to America in 1854, landing at New York. He then went to Cincinnati where he remained a year, and then to St. Louis, and to Clayton county in 1856, he settled in Buena Vista. On April 16th, 1857, he was united in marriage with Magdalena Southeimer, who with two adopted children survive him. Mr. Merkle was highly esteemed by the community in which he lived so many years, and for the past thirty years he has been township clerk and secretary of the school board. The funeral was held on the 27th ult., and was largely attended by sorrowing friends. Rev. olebran, of Cassville, officiated at the last sad rites.
