On Saturday, September 16th, 1899, after an illness of several months occurred the death of Mrs. Herman Koster, nee Burkham, at the residence of her son-in-law, W. H. Meyer, of this township. She was born in Hanover, Germany, Jan. 12, 1812, and at the time of her death had reached the ripe old age of 87 years and several months. In 1832 she married Herman Koster, and with him came to this country and settled at Piqua, Ohio, in 1842. From there they soon moved to Clayton county near Garnavillo. In 1874 her husband died in the 42d year of their married life. Six children were born to them, of which none survive her. Two died when quite young, one in Germany and one at Piqua, Ohio, one son Gehert died at Iroquois, South Dakota, Behrnhart died at Garnavillo, Minnie, Mrs. W. H. Meyer, at Garnavillo, and the last, Alida, Mrs. Claus Meyer at Garnavillo. Twenty-two grandchildren survive her. Mrs. Koster enjoyed a wide acquaintance and was respected by all who knew her. The funeral took place on Monday at 1 o'clock. Rev. Sommerlad conducted the services at the St. Paul Lutheran church after which the remains were consigned to their last resting place. An entire community extend their sympathy to the afflicted relatives. May her soul rest in peace.
