OBITUARY.
In Monona, Iowa, Sept. 13th, 1899, Richard Vincent Humphrey, aged 28 years, 5 months and 21 days.
The deceased was born in Monona township on the 22nd day of March, 1871. His early years were spent on the farm and in the district school, when he entered the Iowa State University and graduated from the law department, a member of the class of '91. On his return from the university he was admitted to membership in the Clayton County Bar and soon opened an office in this city, engaging principally in office work, conveyancing, etc.
June 12th, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Agnes Conway, who with the parents and a sister, and a large circle of relatives survive him., and truly mourn the severing of the family link, by which he is at the very threshold of his manhood, stricken down by a master hand that bids defiance to his will.
Richard was specially favored; he was given every advantage in the commencement of an active life; no effort nor expense was spared in fitting him for the task that falls to the lot of man. The desires and the fondest hopes of the parents were for the prosperity and success of the son, a life replete with good deeds. His early training and his education were for attainment of the best possible results, character, energy, thrift and stability. If he failed in any one of these, the veil of charity will hide them from view, and bring to prominence, as things worthy of emulation, the better parts of the young manhood, the jewels that have lain dormant, yet known and realized by friends and companions. There was geniality in Richard; he had noble and manly traits of character, and among his associates, in the family circle, and with friends, he will be missed. May the God of hosts be with the mourning family.
The funeral took place Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock, at St. Patrick's church, Rev. Father Hogan, resident priest, and Rev. Father McCabe , of Clermont, officiating. The pall bearers were as follows: D. J. Murphy, of Waukon; Dan Costigan and G. H. Schulte, of Elkader; W. A. Ballentine, C. C. Entwistle and Geo. Rupp. of Monona.
Father Hogan was the celebrator of mass and Father McCabe pronounced the eulogy. An impressive service, largely attended.- Monona Leader
