Justus J. Stringer was born in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. N.Y., Dec. 5th, 1840 and died at 11:30 Wednesday evening, March 3, 1909, at the home of his daughter Mrs. G.O. Steward 3 1/2 miles west of town He suffered several weeks from a complications of disease.
He enlisted in the army July 18 1861, in the 36th Illinois Cavalry. He was honorably discharged Aug. 17, 1862.
He was married to Miss Harriet M. Joy at St. Charles, Ill., Feb. 11, 1863. Twelve children were born to them, 9 of whom still survive. John A., of Lacomb, Canada; Howard C. and Mrs. Gertrude Reed of Kennewick, Wash.; Mrs .Edna Brown, of Redding, Cal.; Percy E. and Mrs. Blanche B. Roberts, of Elgin, Ill.; Mrs. Ida C. Steward, Mrs. Emma J., Alderson and Clarence R., of this place. He also leaves one brother, Judd, of Hampshire, Ill., and two sisters,, Mrs. Emma Bishop of Elgin, Ill., and Mrs. Edith Bishop of Fair Oaks, Cal.
Mr. Stringer came to Iowa with his family in 1865 and has resided in this vicinity ever since, being one of the pioneer settlers here forty-four years ago. He has seen the forest cleaered away, the wilderness subdued, and the fields covered with vaving grain, and had no little part in the activities which brought it all about.
He was a man of warm sympathies and kindliness of heart, he will be remembered for his neighborly ministries and for the helping hand extended to those in need. His life work is done He has finished his course.
